Tivadar Košut – World-Renowned Naïve Painter from Novi Bečej

Tivadar Košut, a world-renowned naïve painter, was born in 1947 in Novi Bečej. He inherited his love for painting from his mother, who painted icons. Although his parents wanted him to become a carpenter or a ceramicist, art ultimately became his true calling.

After completing his education, he began working at the “Polet” factory in Novi Bečej, where he soon became head of the department that produced exclusive, hand-painted tiles. He also created clay sculptures and glazed ceramic wall compositions, many of which still adorn the walls of the former factory building.

Košut’s artistic beginnings are linked to the “Selo” group, but he soon chose to go his own way, refusing to follow established rules and stereotypes. Inspired by his mother’s work, he turned to biblical themes, setting himself apart from other painters of the time who favored folklore, landscapes, and pastoral motifs.

With great effort and perseverance, Tivadar Košut’s work reached international recognition. His paintings became highly sought after in France, the United States, Australia, and even Japan. His success was officially confirmed in 1984 when he was included in The Encyclopedia of Naïve Art of the World by Oto Bihalji-Merin.

Today, Košut’s paintings are part of collections owned by renowned artists, politicians, and art lovers around the globe. Through his unique vision and dedication, Tivadar Košut proved that the road less traveled can indeed lead to true success, fame, and artistic greatness.
