Hajnalka Zerebelji – A Pioneer of Women’s Advocacy in Novi Bečej

Hajnalka Zerebelji is the first female lawyer in Novi Bečej. After several decades of professional work, she has gained extensive experience, which she gladly shares with younger colleagues.

She was born on April 14, 1959, in Zrenjanin, where she completed elementary school and high school, majoring in natural sciences and mathematics. She graduated from the Faculty of Law in Novi Sad. Although she was born in Zrenjanin, she considers herself a true citizen of Novi Bečej, a town she describes as having a special soul.

Before becoming a judicial trainee, she briefly worked in the private sector. Soon after, she passed the bar exam and was appointed judge at the former Municipal Court in Novi Bečej, where she served for ten years.

In 1996, she became a member of the Bar Association of Novi Sad and opened her own law practice in Novi Bečej, which she continues to run today. Her beginnings in advocacy were not easy — although well-known as a judge, it took the people of Novi Bečej about a year and a half to accept her as a female lawyer. Even then, she strived to establish a relaxed and trusting relationship with her clients while building the reputation of her law office.

Today, after more than 30 years in the legal profession, Hajnalka Zerebelji believes she has learned a great deal through her work as a judge and her cooperation with colleagues, especially with Zlatoje Marić. She also had the opportunity to mentor two young female lawyers who are now successful professionals and a source of great pride for her.

For Hajnalka Zerebelji, life philosophy is clear – it is important to know what one wants, but also what one does not want. She loves life and people, enjoys helping others, and giving. Although nothing came easy, she believes she was fortunate and that every effort she made was worth it.
