Professor Dr. Aleksandar Kasaš – Historian from Novi Bečej and Expert on the History of Vojvodina

The most renowned historian from Novi Bečej, Professor Dr. Aleksandar Kasaš, was born on January 27, 1952. He completed his primary and secondary education in Novi Bečej, undergraduate studies in history in Novi Sad, and his master’s degree in Belgrade.

His passion for history and research culminated in 1995 when he earned his PhD at the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad, where he later became a full professor teaching the subject History of Yugoslavia.

Professor Kasaš is the author of several books, publications, and over one hundred scientific papers. Among his most notable works are Hungarians in Vojvodina 1941–1946—which was also his doctoral dissertation—numerous studies on the Dunđerski family, and the co-authored book History of the Hungarians (with Péter Rokai, Zoltán György, and Tibor Pal). His distinguished academic career includes numerous studies published in historical journals and collections both in Serbia and abroad, as well as participation in many scientific conferences.

He has made a significant contribution to historical science through his work in various organizations dedicated to the study and preservation of history and culture. Professor Kasaš has served as a leader or member of institutions such as Matica Srpska, the Bogumil Hrabak Foundation (established within the Vojvodina Academy of Sciences and Arts), the expert group for history, ethnology, and archaeology of the Ministry of Science of the Republic of Serbia, and the Professional Council for Social and Humanistic Sciences of the University of Novi Sad Senate. Of particular importance is his leadership of the project Research on the Political, Economic, and Cultural History of Vojvodina.

As a member of the Teaching and Scientific Council, he contributed to the organization of the University of Novi Sad and the Faculty of Philosophy. His impact on educating new generations of historians is immense — 192 history students graduated under his supervision.

Even after retirement, Professor Kasaš remains active. He is a member of the Board of the Homeland Club of Novi Bečej and Vranjevo Citizens and a contributor to the website Novi Bečej Online (novibechej.com). A great admirer of visual arts, he particularly appreciates the works of his fellow townspeople.
