Dr. Pataki Laslo was born on December 31, 1926, in Novi Bečej. He completed his elementary school in Novi Bečej and attended high school in Pančevo and Zrenjanin, graduating with excellent success. He enrolled in the Medical Faculty in Zagreb, which he finished in 1952. He specialized in pediatrics at the Medical Faculty in Belgrade and earned the title of primary care physician.
He practiced at the Dr. Dragiša Mišović hospital, where he was offered a position. However, Dr. Laslo decided to return to Novi Bečej, his hometown, to provide care and assistance, initially to his fellow citizens. Besides treating children, he also treated elderly people.
He decided to specialize in pediatric cardiology. He acquired literature for this specialization from the most scientifically advanced countries at that time (Germany, Hungary, England, and America).
He spoke several foreign languages fluently: French, German, English, and Esperanto, and he also studied Japanese, Arabic, and Chinese. He played the piano, and during his studies in Zagreb, he was an accompanist to the renowned opera singer Zdenka Kunc. He was also involved in composing.
For his involvement in music, his first help came from Professor Nikola Petin of the Novi Sad Music Academy. He was also a connoisseur of fine arts and a friend to many painters, being a collector of paintings.
He spent his entire working career in Novi Bečej, except for two years in Libya (international cooperation through UNICEF, 1976-1977). During his career, he was the director of the Health Center and a delegate in the Federal Assembly. He was an active participant in the cultural life of Novi Bečej and was beloved by his fellow citizens and surroundings, both as a doctor and as a person.
He passed away in 2006, leaving an indelible mark on the life of our town with his deeds.
