One account states that, during a brief period of partial freedom, some wealthier Jews from Novi Bečej managed to escape by bribing German soldiers—often drivers—and fleeing beyond the borders of Serbia. There is also a theory, based on unconfirmed information, that Verona, the daughter of Danijel Cigler, a timber merchant from Novi Bečej, managed to reach Romania thanks to her relationship with a German officer, and later emigrated to Israel after the war. However, this information was never officially confirmed.

After the accident of the small ship Stari Bečej on September 12, 1931, Novi and Stari Bečej were left without daily passenger boat transport for a while. However, this situation didn’t last long, as the Belgrade shipowners Jezdić and Bakarić agreed to provide transport using their beautiful and almost new motorboat Tomislav.

Banat, a vast and fertile plain, but densely dotted with swamps and river branches, became a hub of migration for various peoples in the second half of the 18th century. The indigenous peoples, Serbs and Hungarians, were greatly reduced after the Austro-Turkish wars and the plague epidemics, and the vast areas were empty.

To successfully achieve the goals and objectives of preschool education, a qualified teaching staff was essential. Former educators with five years of secondary education graduated from the Pedagogical Academy for Educators while working between 1975 and 1979. They took pride in the fact that out of 21 educators, 19 graduated from the Academy.

If anyone were to write a chronicle of this festival, they would have to start with the year 1992, when the children's choir from Bočar, conducted by Zagorka Zaga Jegdić, performed as a guest at the Firemen's House in Negotin during the "Mokranjčevi Days." Numerous witnesses of this musical event were captivated by the singing talent of these children and the freshness of their voices.

At the end of the 9th century, specifically in 895, the Hungarians invaded the region along the middle course of the Danube and Tisza rivers, where they encountered numerous South Slavic tribes. Initially participants in and organizers of raids, they gradually transitioned to a settled way of life and adopted many habits and customs of the indigenous South Slavic population.

The competition began in the morning at 10 o’clock with a ceremonial parade of all participants in front of the stands by the Tisa River, which were filled to the last seat. After the presentation of plaques and commemorative awards, the start of the event was officially announced. The jury consisted of the leader of the Belgrade club Bob, Đorđe Paljić, and the event organizers Brana Kiselički and Vasa Nićin.

Vranjevo emerged as a settlement following the disbandment of the Potisje-Pomorišje Military Frontier in 1751. The Serbs who had defended the Austrian Monarchy from the Turks and settled in these areas after the Great Migration of 1690, but chose not to emigrate to Russia, established the so-called Velikokikinda District under the Austrian Crown, with its seat in Kikinda.

Why Did the People of Vranjevo Oppose the Merger with Novi Bečej in the 1930s?

Between the two world wars, Vranjevo and Novi Bečej were two separate administrative municipalities. With the establishment of banovinas in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929, the idea arose to merge settlements where it was economically justifiable. The Association of Merchants and Industrialists, led by Giga Jovanović, one of the most prominent citizens of Novi Bečej at the time, initiated the idea of merging Vranjevo and Novi Bečej into a single entity.

The inhabitants of the Pannonian Plain have always been closely tied to water: the more water, the greater the troubles it brings. Relentlessly, they waged an exhausting battle against water, which brought both benefits and immense hardships. This eternal human desire to tame the destructive force of water is evident in the traces of ruined dikes and canals along rivers and streams, as well as in the settlements that sought refuge at higher altitudes.

Trips to the Ivanović and Rohonci estates sparked a desire for more outings. So, throughout the summer of 1937, almost every evening, after the promenade ended and the shops closed, we would go to the garden of Miloš Gavrić’s tavern. The tavern was located on a corner, across from the Workers' Home, in the house of Duško Nikolić.

Northeast of the settlement of Novi Bečej lies Arača, a significant monument of past centuries and one of the oldest examples of medieval architecture in the region.

Stevan Davidović was born on October 6, 1949, in Novi Bečej. He completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown, where he also graduated from the local Grammar School. He went on to earn a degree from the Higher Pedagogical School in Zrenjanin, majoring in Serbo-Croatian language and the history of Yugoslav literatures.

...On March 27, 1941, communists stood with the masses, explaining the essence of the events and leading all protests and revolts against the shameful and treacherous betrayal of the country by the pro-fascist government.
Throughout the day, communists and members of the Communist Youth League (SKOJ) conducted extensive agitation, aiming to initiate democratization and organize a protest meeting. All social organizations, schools, and the entire village were mobilized.

In geographical terms, Banat is a region in the southern part of the vast Pannonian Plain, bordered by the rivers Mureș, Tisza, Danube, and the Transylvanian Alps. Bela Mičik was born in Novi Bečej in 1970 and is today recognized as one of the finest citera (zither) players in Vojvodina. A versatile musician, he plays as many as fourteen instruments, with a special affection for traditional Hungarian ones — the citera and the tekerő (hurdy-gurdy).

It’s pleasant to recall the wonderful and unforgettable dances at the Sokolana, or at the “kolo”—as the dances held in taverns were called—at Uncle Arsen Pecarski's and Uncle Nova Trbić's place in Vranjevo. It was so beautiful that now, I feel as though in those youthful years, we lived for nothing else but that.

The First Serbian Agricultural Cooperative was founded in Vranjevo in November 1909. The founders of the cooperative were: Dušan Vujackov, Bogoljub Malešev, Miloš Isakov, Ivan Popov, Nova Dujin, Živa Malešev, Živko Pejin, Nikola Tomašev, Marinko Perić, Arkadije Miletić, Živa Pantelić, Joca Vrebalov, and Isa Tomašev. Dušan Vujackov was elected president of the cooperative, and Bogoljub Malešev was chosen as the manager, who both played a major role in the establishment of the cooperative.

The founder of the first Serbian professional theater, Jovan Knežević Caca, was born in Novi Bečej (Vranjevo) on September 26, 1818, to father Mojsije, a merchant, and mother Sofija, a homemaker. His love for theater and actors was nurtured in his parents' home.

Dragiša Bunjevački, a painter from Novi Bečej and the founder of the group “Selo,” was born in 1925 in Pančevo.
He was an artist who lived to paint, but never lived from painting nor painted merely to survive.

At the same time, from the synagogue in Novi Bečej, young Jewish anti-fascists were deported to a special prison near the District Court in Veliki Bečkerek. Among them were Đerđ “Đurika” Šlezinger, Herman Bergl, Ištvan “Pišta” Šlezinger, and Margita “Dunda” Huven. They never returned—on July 31, 1941, they were executed as part of the first large group of 90 hostages from across Banat.

The Tisa River Dam near Novi Bečej is the largest facility of the Danube–Tisa–Danube Hydrosystem. Its primary function is to release water by gravity into the main canal network of Banat, enabling the irrigation of vast agricultural areas and supplying water to other users. In this way, the released water can be used for multiple purposes simultaneously.

Tivadar Košut, a world-renowned naïve painter, was born in 1947 in Novi Bečej. He inherited his love for painting from his mother, who painted icons. Although his parents wanted him to become a carpenter or a ceramicist, art ultimately became his true calling.

On the dike, from the river navigation agency, today’s Workers’ Home, to the ferry house at the corner of Svetozara Miletića Street, it was a promenade from spring to autumn. It was truly enjoyable to stroll along the dike, admiring the beauty of the Tisa and its forested banks.
