After the accident of the small ship Stari Bečej on September 12, 1931, Novi and Stari Bečej were left without daily passenger boat transport for a while. However, this situation didn’t last long, as the Belgrade shipowners Jezdić and Bakarić agreed to provide transport using their beautiful and almost new motorboat Tomislav.
The development of water management in Vojvodina, Banat, and our Novi Bečej region is presented in the following exposition as a report, or more precisely, a story about water and what people have created by living and working on and around water over the past 150 years.
The first parliamentary elections for the Constituent Assembly were called only two years after the unification, at a time when the bourgeoisie believed it had achieved a certain level of international and internal consolidation.
On the dike, from the river navigation agency, today’s Workers’ Home, to the ferry house at the corner of Svetozara Miletića Street, it was a promenade from spring to autumn. It was truly enjoyable to stroll along the dike, admiring the beauty of the Tisa and its forested banks.
In those frequent walks, I would go, in my thoughts, to the Great Warehouse, pondering its antiquity (built in 1780) and all it had endured over time.
Bela Mičik was born in Novi Bečej in 1970 and is today recognized as one of the finest citera (zither) players in Vojvodina. A versatile musician, he plays as many as fourteen instruments, with a special affection for traditional Hungarian ones — the citera and the tekerő (hurdy-gurdy).
No more than three or four days had passed since our excursion to the Ivanović estate, and by Sunday, we were off on another one—this time much longer and more exhausting for walking. From Novi Bečej to the Rohonci estate in the Bečej marshland, or as it is known today, Pearl Island, it is at least eight kilometers one way. If you're counting the total distance for both directions, then maybe this trip isn't for you!
The defeat against Banat, which had experienced adult players, did not discourage the boys of Zvezda. On the contrary, they devoted themselves even more to training and played two away matches – the first in Bašaid and the second in Baodra. In these games, Zvezda also included a few former Jedinstvo players, which added physical strength to the team, but it came at the cost of the technical combination play that had been their trademark. Had they continued this way, Zvezda probably would not have fared better than Banat.
Ljubiša Jocić was a poet, writer, painter, director, and an experimenter with form and meaning—but above all, a man of play and artistic exploration. His creative journey spanned half a century, leaving behind a rich body of work that includes poems, novels, anti-novels, plays, films, and paintings.
László Gomba appeared on the football scene of Novi Bečej at a very young age. Together with Ferik Kiš and József Čanji, he was among the group of young enthusiasts who initiated the founding of a new club in Novi Bečej in 1940, originally named Napredak. Shortly after its establishment, the club changed its name to S.K. Zanatlija, where Laci quickly secured a place in the first team and proved his footballing quality.

Invitation Composers’ Competition
The 13th edition of the event “Horizons on the Tisa” – Josif Marinković Days began on 18 May in Belgrade, when a delegation from Novi Bečej laid flowers at the graves of Josif Marinković and his grandson, Dr. Ivan Valčić. On the official opening day, 24 May, a wreath was also placed on the building of the former birthplace of the composer in Novi Bečej.
Ljubica Odadžić was born in 1917 into a poor peasant family. In her early youth, she left her parents' home and moved to Belgrade in search of work. Through Milica Blažić in her hometown, she became acquainted with the ideas of the progressive movement. Upon arriving in Belgrade, she was quickly accepted by progressive comrades who helped her find employment. She started working at the "Mitić" Textile Factory, now known as the "Beograd Cotton Plant."
Banat, a vast and fertile plain, but densely dotted with swamps and river branches, became a hub of migration for various peoples in the second half of the 18th century. The indigenous peoples, Serbs and Hungarians, were greatly reduced after the Austro-Turkish wars and the plague epidemics, and the vast areas were empty.
Drinking in front of stores in Serbia is not just a custom – it’s an institution! It dates back to the first store and the first bottle of rakija – essentially, since the dawn of time. Even the old craftsmen in the Ottoman period would take a “merak break,” drinking in front of shops while debating if it would rain.
The Law on Social Care for Children came into effect on July 2, 1992, marking the beginning of changes in the functioning and operations of preschool institutions.
The 1992/93 school year was extremely challenging, characterized by high inflation and difficulties in making ends meet. The Ministry of Veterans' and Social Affairs provided food supplies for the children's meals.
This image shows the appearance of Novi Bečej in the late 1910s, with a focus on its Main Street — at the time, the central axis of everyday life, trade, education, and religion. On the left side, we see the prominent building of the state school, one of the cornerstones of the town’s modernization. This institution served not only as a place of learning but also as a space for shaping the collective identity of a diverse population.
Between 1947 and 1957, research, geodetic surveys, studies, and conceptual designs were carried out.
From 1957 to 1977, main designs were developed and the basic canal network was constructed. The works were carried out under variable conditions, and the difficulties encountered caused delays and slowed down construction.
The Kostović family settled in the mid-19th century in the settlement of Potisje, known as Franjevu (the old name for Vranjevo), most likely due to its exceptional geographical location for grain trade. The family patriarch, Jovan Kostović, and his son Stevan were both skilled merchants, amassing significant wealth and great respect.
To successfully achieve the goals and objectives of preschool education, a qualified teaching staff was essential. Former educators with five years of secondary education graduated from the Pedagogical Academy for Educators while working between 1975 and 1979. They took pride in the fact that out of 21 educators, 19 graduated from the Academy.
The children’s football clubs Zvezda and Banat in Novi Bečej effectively existed as early as 1932, rather than 1931 as later stated on Zvezda’s official memorandum. It should also be noted that during its first two years, Banat competed under the name Orao.
After drainage, water supply has taken the most significant place. Future water consumption from the Basic Canal Network (OKM) and the spatial distribution of water demand have been considered. The characteristics of the OKM's water intake points on the Danube and Tisa Rivers have been studied, with attention to technical reliability and cost-effectiveness of water supply.
On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of its establishment (1882 – 2012)
The organization of the fire service in the territory of present-day Vojvodina initially began in a scattered, sporadic, unorganized, and disconnected manner. The involvement of central authorities was not felt, as it was more of a matter for individual municipalities or, at best, the first higher socio-political communities, such as counties in the Austrian Empire, later Austria-Hungary.
Novi Bečej, along with Vranjevo, was a prominent trading center during the era of the Great Kikinda District, particularly known for its grain export trade in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

In the last days of May 1997, the small town on the left bank of the Tisa River once again came alive with the spirit of the Days of Josif Marinković.
The renowned artist and painter Tibor Nađ was born in Novi Bečej on March 23, 1952. He completed his primary education in his hometown and later graduated from the Bogdan Šuput School of Design in Novi Sad, majoring in Interior and Furniture Design.
Altered economic conditions and the development of productive forces in agriculture are the main reasons for the disappearance of farmhouses. With the reduction of land ownership limits after World War II, first to 20, and then to 10 hectares, farmhouses lose their previous significance in production.
The Košut family lived in a modest house covered with reeds, with small, misty windows through which young Tivadar observed and created his own world. Sitting by the oil lamp, he listened to the stories of old women about the creation of the world, Adam and Eve, the flood, Christ and his miracles, dreaming how happy he would be if he could paint it all.
In the years leading up to World War II, the Jewish community of Novi Bečej lived much like the rest of the town’s population. They did not perceive the rise of fascist movements across Europe as an immediate threat to their survival, believing that, if war broke out, they would manage like everyone else. This belief was perhaps reinforced by the fact that there were very few ethnic Germans in Novi Bečej, and anti-Semitism was not openly felt.

After the first two “Horizons on the Tisa,” the organizers began preparations for the third festival with even greater enthusiasm and foresight.
Often, especially at night when I wake up, I find myself walking in my mind through the New Bečej and Vranjevo of the past, as I left them in my youth, and how they became dear to my heart.
