Lajos Čanji (1916-1986)

Photographer Lajos Čanji was born in Novi Bečej. After his basic education, his parents apprenticed him to Konstantin Vukov, where he learned the photographic craft from 1932 to 1934. He worked briefly in Čurug before returning to his hometown during the occupation (1941-1944). In 1950, Konstantin Vukov took him on as an assistant, and Čanji continued to refine his photographic skills in Vukov's studio.

Lajos Čanji (1916-1986)When the elderly Vukov and his wife grew old, Čanji and his wife Margit took care of them. According to Dr. Konstantin Vukov's granddaughter, “Uncle Čanji cared for my grandfather and grandmother as if he were their own son. The attention that my parents from Hungary could not provide, he gave them.” After Konstantin Vukov's death, Čanji moved into the house with his family and continued his work in photography until the mid-1970s, specifically until 1978, when he retired. The family home of Lajos Čanji was located at 20 Tapai Šandor Street, right at the beginning of the sunny side of the street.

Continuing the craft and managing Konstantin Vukov's photographic studio, which, after World War II, did not keep up with new technical advancements, Lajos Čanji mostly followed the well-trodden paths of his master. He used old equipment and accessories and did not pay much attention to updating his technique. Most of Lajos Čanji's photographs were taken in the studio. While Vukov often and eagerly went out to capture events around town with his camera, Čanji became and remained, one might say, exclusively a studio photographer.
