Early Swimming Competitions in Zrenjanin 1952

Early Swimming Competitions in Zrenjanin 1952 | History of Swimming in Banat

Officially, in 1952, the Swimming Sub-Association of Zrenjanin began its work in accordance with newly adopted regulations. During this period, clubs organized swimming competitions in four main styles: freestyle (front crawl), breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly.

Race distances were as follows: in freestyle and breaststroke, swimmers competed in 50, 100, and 200-meter events, while in backstroke and butterfly, races were held over 50 and 100 meters. Relay events were swum as 4 × 50 meters, in both freestyle and medley formats.

Each club had two representatives in the men’s events, while the situation in the women’s category was more modest—clubs typically had only one female swimmer. In the most demanding discipline, butterfly, smaller clubs often had no female competitors at all.

After the swimming program, which lasted just over an hour, water polo matches were held. Interestingly, the water polo players were also swimmers who had previously competed in the swimming events.
